Healthcare professionals play a vital role in ensuring Canadians have access to quality medical services, especially in underserved rural and remote communities. Recognizing this, the Government of Canada offers student loan forgiveness to family doctors and nurses who dedicate their practice to these areas. This program helps reduce the financial burden of student loans while encouraging medical professionals to serve in regions that need them the most.
Eligibility Criteria
You may be eligible to apply for Canada Student Loan forgiveness whether you are still in school, in repayment, or within your six-month non-repayment period. To qualify, you must:
- Have been employed for a full year and provided in-person services for a minimum of 400 hours in an eligible community. (Family medicine residents are exempt from this requirement.)
- Have a Canada Student Loan that is in good standing (if in repayment, you must be up to date on your payments).
Eligible Medical Professions
The following healthcare professionals may qualify for loan forgiveness under this program:
- Family doctors
- Family medicine residents in training with an accredited Canadian medical school
- Registered nurses (RN)
- Registered psychiatric nurses
- Registered practical nurses
- Licensed practical nurses
- Nurse practitioners
Eligible Communities
As of November 6, 2024, the Government of Canada has revised the definition of underserved rural and remote communities. Eligible communities are determined based on population size and include:
- A population center with no more than 30,000 residents
- A rural area
The previous definition of eligible communities will remain valid until after the 2026 census. To determine if your location qualifies, you can use the postal code lookup tool provided by the government.
Even if the community where you worked is no longer classified as eligible, you can still receive loan forgiveness if you continue working in the same area where you previously received the benefit. You may also work in multiple eligible communities during the year, as long as you meet the 400-hour requirement over a 12-month period.
How Much Can You Receive?
The amount of loan forgiveness you receive depends on your profession:
- Family doctors and residents: Up to $40,000 over a maximum of five years
- Nurses and nurse practitioners: Up to $20,000 over a maximum of five years
What You Need Before You Start
