Have you been looking into accounting apps, but you don’t know where to start? We love and recommend Xero, because of its ease of use and high functionality. With Xero, you can do everything from sending invoices to monitoring your company’s key performance indicators.
We’re also a Xero Certified Partner, so if you want to save even more time, skip to the bottom for a major shortcut to getting started with Xero!
Choose a Plan
Xero currently has three levels of plans available to the general public. The plan you choose will depend on your needs. For example, the Starter Plan only allows you to send 20 invoices per month. If you send more invoices than this, you’ll need to go with either the Standard or Premium plan.
The Premium Plan allows you to use multiple currencies. This is beneficial if you accept PayPal and have people paying you in US dollars, for example. For most businesses, the Standard plan will work nicely, but it doesn’t hurt to confirm this with your accountant.
Enter Your Company Info
When you first join Xero, you will be prompted to enter your contact information. This is the information Xero will use to contact you, so make sure you use your business email and phone number.
One of the first things you will be asked to provide when you sign up for Xero is your company information. If you will be using Xero for invoicing, enter the information the way you want it to appear on the invoices you send to customers. Xero makes it really easy to add your company logo too so it appears on your invoices.
Import Your Chart of Accounts
A chart of accounts is a list of all the general ledger accounts you use to record your bookkeeping transactions. Xero comes with a default chart of accounts, so you can start entering transitions as soon as your company information has been added to Xero. If you want to import a custom chart of accounts, now’s the time to do that.
You might want to import a custom chart of accounts if you’ve been using another accounting app or software program but want to keep the same account names and numbers. This is also a great time to archive any accounts you won’t be using.
Xero has a great Xero 101 video series for getting started with Xero and learning all its amazing features. The series even covers how to connect your bank account to Xero. If this all feels a bit overwhelming, read on for our shortcut to getting started with Xero.
